Obtaining an Occupancy Permit Once the property has passed inspection, complete the Application for Occupancy Permit (PDF). Submit this application and permit fee to City Halll, and the Occupancy Permit will be issued once the application and fee are secured.
A Certificate of Occupancy will automatically be produced for new construction and/or a “Change-in-Use” 48 hours after an approved final inspection, as long as other required City approvals (such as Driveways) are obtained. A Certificate of Occupancy is not necessary for a residential addition or alteration.
When a building or structure is entitled thereto, the enforcing agency shall issue a certificate of use and occupancy within 5 business days after receipt of a written application therefor on a form to be prescribed by the enforcing agency and payment of the fee to be established by it.
To obtain your Washington DC Certificate of Occupancy, you must complete and submit the Certificate of Occupancy Application to the Department of Buildings. Any applications that are mailed will be returned.
Request for certificate of occupancy can be submitted via email, fax or in person in Room 408. (Applications are available on line or in Room 408.) 6. Applicant information (contractor, company/owner or authorized person) must be on the request forms as it appears on the building permit.
