How to fill out the LoC Veterans History Project online
The Library of Congress Veterans History Project aims to collect and preserve personal narratives from America’s veterans to honor their service. This guide will help you easily navigate the process of filling out the necessary forms online to participate in this important project.
Follow the steps to submit your veteran's story online.
- Click ‘Get Form’ button to obtain the form and open it in the editor.
- Complete the Biographical Data Form. This form is essential and must be accompanied by each submission. Ensure the information provided is accurate, including the veteran's name, address, birth date, and military service history.
- Fill out the Veteran’s Release Form. This is important to grant permission for the use of the collected materials. The veteran or the donor, in case of deceased veterans, must sign this form.
- Prepare to conduct the interview or gather materials. If you are interviewing a veteran, ensure the recording lasts at least 30 minutes and is unedited. If submitting documents or photographs, ensure only original materials are included.
- Submit your collection. Make two copies of the interview and related materials. Keep one copy for yourself and provide one to the veteran. Send the collection to the address provided in the instructions, using a commercial delivery service to avoid damages.
- Wait for acknowledgment. After submission, you can expect a postcard from VHP acknowledging receipt of your materials within eight to ten weeks.
- Access the online record. Collections may take six to eight months to process before they appear in the online database.
