About 500 years ago, as Europeans began settling in North America, the ancestors of the Mille Lacs Band began migrating west from the Atlantic coast of North America to the place “where the food grows on water.” By the mid-1700s, the Ojibwe had established themselves in the region around Mille Lacs Lake in what is ...

By the 1600s there were two main groups of people living in present-day Minnesota, the Dakota and the Ojibwe (also known as Chippewa, Ojibway, or Ojibwa).

The Mille Lacs Reservation is located in east central Minnesota, 100 miles north of Minneapolis/St. Paul. The tribal headquarters is near Onamia, Minnesota.

Ojibwe and Chippewa are the versions of the same word pronounced differently because of English versus French accents (placing an "O" in front of Chippewa results in the word "O'chippewa"). "Ojibwe" is used in Canada, while Ojibwe living west of Lake Winnipeg are sometimes referred to as the Saulteaux.

In Ojibwe, the lake is known as Misi-zaaga'igan megwe Midaaswaakogamaakaan (Grand/Great/Big Lake in the Region of a Thousand Lakes), or simply as Misi-zaaga'igan (Grand Lake), as it is the largest lake in the Brainerd Lakes Area.

A significant number of American Indians in Minnesota are Chippewa, with reservations located in central and northern parts of the state, including the Bois Forte (Nett Lake), Fond du Lac, Grand Portage, Leech Lake, Mille Lacs, White Earth, and Red Lake Reservations.

Additionally, Minnesota is also home to the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe (MCT). MCT is comprised of six of the seven Ojibwe bands and is a federally recognized tribal government that promotes and protects the member bands.

In the United States, there are 77,940 mainline Ojibwe; 76,760 Saulteaux; and 8,770 Mississauga, organized in 125 bands.

The Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe (Ojibwe: Misi-zaaga'iganing Anishinaabeg), also known as the Mille Lacs Band of Chippewa Indians, is a federally recognized American Indian tribe in east-central Minnesota.

Minnesota Chippewa Tribe, Minnesota (Six component reservations: Bois Forte Band (Nett Lake); Fond du Lac Band; Grand Portage Band; Leech Lake Band; Mille Lacs Band; White Earth Band)
