Nearly every Washington worker can qualify for paid leave as long as you worked a minimum of 820 hours (about 16 hours a week) in Washington over the last year. The 820 hours can be at one job or combined from multiple jobs. Full-time, part-time, temporary and seasonal work counts.

Benefits provide a percentage of the employee's gross wages – between $100-1,000 per week – while the employee is on approved leave. To receive benefits under the Paid Family and Medical Leave program, you must have worked a total of at least 820 hours for any Washington employers during the previous 12 months.

PFML provides up to 90% of an employee's weekly pay — up to the maximum weekly benefit amount (which is updated annually). PFML is available to eligible employees regardless of the size of the employer, whereas FMLA leave is available only for eligible employees working in organizations with 50 or more employees.

In circumstances when the employee or family member is visiting in another country, or a family member resides in another country, and a serious health condition develops, the employer must accept a medical certification (as well as second and third opinions) from a health care provider who practices in that country.

FMLA applies to employers with ≥ 50 employees within a 75 mile radius; employees must have worked 1,250 hours in the past year. FMLA covers unpaid leave-12 weeks of care of self or family member with a serious health condition. This includes spouse, child, or parent.

The Paid Family Medical Leave program requires employers with 50 or more employees to provide job protection for the duration of the employee's PFML (RCW 50A. 35.010), provided the employee has worked: for 12 months or longer; and.

Eligible workers in Washington can take up to 12 weeks of medical leave or family leave, or up to 16 to 18 weeks of combined medical and family leave in a year.

The use of FMLA does not reduce your allowed Paid Family and Medical Leave benefit, so it is possible to use both types of leave. It is important to note that Paid Family and Medical Leave and FMLA can usually run concurrently too, since many Paid Family and Medical Leave events also qualify for FMLA.
