The DeCoste Writing Protocol (DWP) is an informal diagnostic tool that helps educators identify factors affecting an individual student's ability to produce writing. The Writing Protocol compares a child's individual performance across handwriting and keyboarding tasks.

To determine the number of words written per minute, time student for one minute and add up all letters composed (letter reversals can be counted but note writing difficulties anecdotally). Divide the number of letters written per minute by five to obtain the number of words written per minute.

Handwriting. For an adult population (age range 18–60) the average speed of copying is 40 letters per minute (approximately 8 wpm), with the range from a minimum of 26 to a maximum of 113 letters per minute (approximately 5 to 20 wpm).

Simply count all typed entries and divide by five to get the number of words typed. To give an example, if you typed 200 characters in 1 minute, your net wpm typing speed would be (200 characters / 5) / 1 min = 40 WPM. If you typed 200 characters in 30 seconds your net speed would be (200/5) / 0.5 = 80 WPM.
