IGs will always strive to identify areas where a unit is not meeting Army or organizational standards. They will also identify the root cause of the noncompliance and work with the chain of command on the best solution.

The first step for a military member to know there may be trouble ahead is finding out that there is either a commander's inquiry (command investigation) or administrative investigation that has been initiated.

The primary purpose of an investigation is to report on matters that the appointing authority has designated for inquiry. The appointment orders may also contain specific guidance from the appointing authority, which, even though not required by AR 15-6, nevertheless must be followed.

A Commander's Inquiry is intended to bring obvious errors and injustice such as improperly. designated or unqualified rating officials; inaccurate or untrue statements; or lack of objectivity or. fairness to the Commander's attention before they are filed in the Soldier's official record.

There are (4) different types of AR 15-6 Investigations the Army: 1) a preliminary inquiry; 2) an administrative investigation; 3) a collateral investigation; or 4) a board of officers.

A Commander's Inquiry is typically a preliminary assessment conducted by a lower-ranking commander within their unit. At the same time, a 15-6 Investigation is a more thorough and independent investigation carried out by a higher-ranking officer or civilian authority.

AR 15-6 is used as the basis for many investigations requiring the detailed gathering and analyzing of facts and the making of recommendations based on those facts.

a. AR 15-6 sets forth procedures for the conduct of informal and formal investigations. Only informal investigations will be discussed here. Informal investigations are those that usually have a single investigating officer who conducts interviews and collects evidence.
