The Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS) is a self-report questionnaire that consists of two 10-item scales to measure both positive and negative affect. Each item is rated on a 5-point scale of 1 (not at all) to 5 (very much).

The total score is calculated by finding the sum of the 10 positive items, and then the 10 negative items. Scores range from 10 – 50 for both sets of items. For the total positive score, a higher score indicates more of a positive affect. For the total negative score, a lower score indicates less of a negative affect.

I-PANAS-SF is a short form and an international version. It is designed for use by different nationalities. The assessment also has fewer ambiguities or less room for misinterpretations. PANAS-X is a much more refined version of the test, developed in 1994 by Watson and Clark.

The Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS) (Watson, Clark, & Tellegen, 1988) is one of the most widely used scales to measure mood or emotion. This brief scale is comprised of 20 items, with 10 items measuring positive affect (e.g., excited, inspired) and 10 items measuring negative affect (e.g., upset, afraid).

Factor analysis revealed three factors or subscales‚ these are: Activating Positive Affect (e.g. “excited”‚ “dynamic”‚ “active”); Relaxed Positive Affect e.g.‚ “relaxed”‚ “calm”‚ “peaceful”) and Safeness/contentment Positive Affect (e.g.‚ “safe”‚ “secure”‚ “warm”).
