An NJP is not a conviction but it can absolutely follow you around, even after you've been discharged from military service.

Except in the case of a service member attached to or embarked in a vessel (normally Sailors assigned to ships or Marines/Sailors embarked on a ship for a deployment), the member can refuse non-judicial punishment (NJP) under Article 15, UCMJ and demand trial by court-martial.

The exception is for Navy and Coast Guard personnel assigned to a sea going command they have no right to refuse NJP. ... By refusing NJP, and having the case referred to trial by court-martial, the service member takes the final disposition of the case out of the hands of the commander.

Whether you accept NJP or not is, largely, going to depending on this answer. While NJP appears to often be a safer option for servicemen and women and, it usually is the fact is, it also strips away all of your Constitutional rights as the accused.

By refusing NJP, and having the case referred to trial by court-martial, the service member takes the final disposition of the case out of the hands of the commander.

NJPs - unlike courts-martial results, which are public record - are considered privacy information. Any information about your NJPs (along with SSNs in your service record, as well as dependent info, etc. etc.) will have to be redacted or withheld under the FOIA.

The punishments meted out for an NJP offense are limited to confinement on diminished rations, restriction to certain specified limits, arrest in quarters, correctional custody, extra duties, forfeiture of pay, detention of pay and reduction in grade.

There is NO expungement of military court-martial records, even if you are acquitted at trial.

The paperwork from the proceeding can also be filed in a way that prevents further advancement in the military. It is not a conviction.
