The standard deduction amounts for the 2019 tax year are $12,200 for individuals, $18,350 for heads of household, and $24,400 for married couples filing jointly and surviving spouses. For 2019, the additional standard deduction amount for seniors or the blind is $1,300.

If you are Married Filing Jointly and you OR your spouse is 65 or older, your standard deduction increases by $1,300. If BOTH you and your spouse are 65 or older, your standard deduction increases by $2,600. If one of you is legally blind, it increases by $1,300 and if both are it increases by $2,600.

Standard Deduction for Seniors - If you do not itemize your deductions, you can get a higher standard deduction amount if you and/or your spouse are 65 years old or older. You can get an even higher standard deduction amount if either you or your spouse is blind. (See Form 1040 and Form 1040A instructions.)

Taking the standard deduction might be easier, but if your total itemized deductions are greater than the standard deduction available for your filing status, saving receipts and tallying those expenses can result in a lower tax bill.

The standard deduction for 2020 is $12,400 for singles and $24,800 for married joint filers. There is also an additional standard deduction, for older taxpayers and those who are blind. A married filer who is blind or aged 65 and over can claim $1,300 for themselves.

Line 12a reports the total amount of the distribution and line 12b reports the taxable portion, if any. Next to line 12b, write "rollover." If you're rolling the money from one tax-deferred account to another, such as from a 401(k) to another 401(k) or traditional IRA, the entire rollover is tax-free.

For the 2019 tax year, seniors over 65 may increase their standard deduction by $1,300. If both you and your spouse are over 65 and file jointly, you can increase the amount by $2,600.
