The next best time to start this treatment is as soon as the adult canine teeth have broken through the gingiva and the primary canine teeth have exfoliated or been removed. Typically, this is around 5 to 5.5 months of age.

Ball Therapy is used to attempt to correct any possible malocclusion. The concept is pretty simple - encourage your puppy to play with a rubber ball every day for at least 15 minutes. Encourage your puppy to carry the ball in their mouth, just behind the canine teeth.

Ball therapy is a treatment used to attempt correct linguoverted mandibular canines (base narrow canines). At its core ball therapy is an orthodontic treatment where the appliance is removable, and fun to play with!

When puppies usually grow out of the chewing phase, these dogs won't grow out of it. They will chew everything and it can actually be an issue for them and for their owners if expensive pieces of clothing or furniture are involved.

For puppies who have had their lower primary canine teeth extracted because they were lingually displaced, I typically recommend starting to train the pup to play with balls about 7 to 14 days after the extractions (giving those wounds time to heal first).

You need to encourage play with the ball several times a day (6-8) or as often as they will tolerate with a short attention span. The ball should be only at the front of the mouth to go any good. If there are no positive results in six weeks therapy can be discontinued.

Unfortunately, ball therapy will not prove to be effective for all puppies with malocclusions, but the risk is very low in attempting this method. Some puppies with malocclusions will require veterinary dental procedures to help correct their bites.
