Corporations use Form 8827 to figure the minimum tax credit, if any, for AMT incurred in prior tax years, the refundable AMT credit amount, and to figure any minimum tax credit carryforward. Form 8827 should be filed by corporations that had a minimum tax credit carryover from 2018 to 2019.

You do not need income to be eligible for the Child Tax Credit if your main home is in the United States for more than half the year. If you do not have income, and do not meet the main home requirement, you will not be able to benefit from the Child Tax Credit because the credit will not be refundable.

You can only claim this credit in a year when you don't have to pay AMT. You can't use the credit to reduce your AMT liability in the future. However, AMT credit carryforward is granted for unused portion of the credit to future years.

The amount of MTC that can be applied in any taxable year is limited because the MTC cannot reduce regular tax below the TMT, but any unused MTC can be carried forward indefinitely.

Any unused credit may be carried forward indefinitely as a credit against regular tax liability to the extent that regular tax liability reduced by all other nonrefundable credits exceeds tentative AMT liability for the tax year. The credit may not offset AMT liability.

The AMT is calculated based on the difference between the fair market value (FMV) of the shares on the date that you exercised the shares and the exercise price. AMT credit can be used to lower your federal income tax bill when the amount you owe on taxes is more than what it would have been under the AMT.

Claiming AMT Credit (Form 8801) In order to claim your AMT credit, you will need to file IRS form 8801. You typically will not be able to claim 100% of your AMT credit right away due to limitations. Recall that when calculating AMT you calculate your tax in two ways.

If you are not, then you will pay the amount of your regular tax liability. However, you should still use Form 8801 to calculate the amount of the credit you are due. You can carry it forward to your next eligible tax year for a maximum carry-forward of 20 years.
