1042-1066) In 1042 Edward 'the Confessor' became King. As the surviving son of Ethelred and his second wife, Emma, he was a half-brother of Hardicanute, through their mother.

Because Edward the Confessor died without an heir, it was not clear who should succeed him. The problem was that there was no definite way of choosing a successor. ❖ It helped to be a relative of the previous king, but it was not a guarantee.

The death of Edward the Confessor and the conflicting claims to the English Crown. Edward the Confessor, the last Anglo-Saxon king of England, died on 5 January 1066 – 950 years ago. The Confessor's modern-day reputation (shaped by medieval monks writing after his death) is that of a gentle and peaceable man.

England was quiet and prosperous during Edward's reign. He lived relatively modestly at his own expense and so taxation was light. Edward can also be seen as a weak and indecisive and sometimes violent leader whose failure to leave an heir led to the Norman invasion of Britain and the end of Saxon rule.

Why did Edward have no direct heir? Some Norman sources have suggested that Edward was a very religious man and took a vow of celibacy . Modern historians believe that Edward refused to have children with Edith Godwin because of his hatred of his father-in-law.

Some portray Edward the Confessor's reign as leading to the disintegration of royal power in England and the advance in power of the House of Godwin, because of the infighting that began after his death with no heirs to the throne.

Harald Hardrada believed that he was the rightful heir to the English throne because he was a descendant of King Canute of England. He claimed his family was promised it could rule England.

Edward had no children, leaving confusion about his line of succession on his death in 1066. Three parties claimed the throne should be theirs, including Earl Godwin's son, Harold Godwinson, who had been a powerful figure throughout Edward's reign and had managed to conquer Wales for him.
