Hobbs time is a measure of the total time that an aircraft has been in operation. In other words, it is the total number of hours the aircraft's engine has been running. Therefore, Hobbs time is generally measured since the master switch is on. Hobbs time is usually expressed in hours and tenths of an hour.

The timing of these inspections is calculated via the tachometer. For example, if your last 100-hour inspection was performed when the tachometer read 2,500 hours, you would need your next inspection would need to be performed at 2,600 hours.

Tach time is generally 20% less than Hobbs time, depending on the types of flights undertaken. Both tach and Hobbs time are logged in the aircraft's logbook (often referred to as a flight folio).

Hobbs time increases as the clock moves forward. Tach time, on the other hand, moves faster or slower depending on engine RPM. So for example, while taxiing, tach time is only about 40% of Hobbs time. For pattern work, it's somewhere between 60 - 70%.

The Hobbs Meter is named after John Weston Hobbs (1889–1968), who in 1938 founded the company named after him in Springfield, Illinois which manufactured the first electrically wound clocks for vehicle use.

Therefore, Hobbs time is generally measured since the master switch is on. Hobbs time is usually expressed in hours and tenths of an hour. For example, if an aircraft engine has been running for 1 hour and 15 minutes, the Hobbs time would be 1.25 hours.

Tach time can be thought of as “engine time” because it is a time measure of how much strain the engine has undergone. Tach time is generally 20% less than Hobbs time, depending on the types of flights undertaken. Both tach and Hobbs time are logged in the aircraft's logbook (often referred to as a flight folio).

Tach Time Explained The tachometer's primary use is to measure engine hours, which are recorded in your airplane's engine logbooks and used to determine when your airplane needs its 50 and 100-hour inspections.
