Internal vs External Locus of Control Locus of control is how much individuals perceive that they themselves have control over their own actions as opposed to events in life occurring instead because of external forces. It is measured along a dimension of 'high internal' to 'high external'.

The Health Student Academic Locus of Control Scale is a 20-item context-specific scale, developed to measure Internal and External control beliefs of students in courses allied to medicine. Psychometric properties are acceptable (N = 164) so the scale can be used to measure control beliefs in a longitudinal study.

For example, students with an internal locus of control might blame poor grades on their failure to study, whereas students with an external locus of control may blame an unfair teacher or test for their poor performance.

The I-E Scale was designed to assess individual differences in beliefs about control of reinforcement. The scale differentiates between a belief in internal control (reinforcement is dependent upon the individual's actions) vs. external control (reinforcement is dependent upon chance or the actions/control of others).

The Locus of Control Scale (LCS) is a 29-item questionnaire that measures an individual's level of internal-external control, in other words, the degree to which the individual interprets events as being a result of their own actions or external factors.

Locus of control was measured with Levenson (1981) scale. Originally, this scale consists of three subscales; internal locus of control, powerful others, and chance. High scores on both the powerful others- and the chance subscales are thought to reflect an external locus of control orientation.

Those with an internal locus of control believe that their own behavior determines events in their lives, while those with an external locus of control believe that life events are generally outside of their control.

People who have an internal locus of control believe they are in control of their actions, and therefore are not influenced. People who have an external locus of control believe their environment controls their actions, supposedly meaning they are more vulnerable to conformity or obedience.
