Cows must calve to produce milk and the lactation cycle is the period between one calving and the next. The cycle is split into four phases, the early, mid and late lactation (each of about 120 days, or d) and the dry period (which should last as long as 65 d). In an ideal world, cows calve every 12 months.

Protein requirements are reduced during mid-lactation. During late lactation, milk production will continue to decline along with feed intake. Cows will gain weight to support the growing fetus and replenish tissues lost from early lactation. The mammary gland of a cow requires a dry period.

Lactation is the process of producing and releasing milk from the mammary glands in your breasts. Lactation begins in pregnancy when hormonal changes signal the mammary glands to make milk in preparation for the birth of your baby.

Lactation stage is defined as the number of days milking per cows per lactation. Milk yield was calculated per udder quarter in the AMS and was added to 1 record per cow and trait for each milking.

The fat, lactose and protein contents of milk vary ing to stage of lactation. Solids-not-fat content is usually highest during the first 2 to 3 weeks, after which it decreases slightly.

The hormonal control of lactation can be described in relation to five major stages in the development of the mammary gland. (1) embryogenesis; (2) mammogenesis or mammary growth; (3) Lactogenesis or initiation of milk secretion; (4) lactation or full milk secretion; and (5) involution when the infant is weaned.

Milk fat and protein percentages are highest during the fall and winter and lowest during the spring and summer.
