Kente cloths are made from narrow strips sewn together to form a lively pattern. Asante weavers use a narrow strip loom common throughout West Africa. The warp threads stretch out behind the loom and are anchored under heavy rocks about ten feet away.

Kente is woven by hand using a loom made out of wood. Various colors and qualities of yarn are used. Kente made from silk yarn is considered very prestigious. In the past, cotton was locally grown; today, factories make most of the cotton used for Kente.

Kente production can be classified by three versions: authentic kente cloth made by traditional weavers, kente print produced by brands such as Vlisco and Akosombo Textile Ltd, and mass-produced kente pattern typically produced in China for West Africans.

Kente cloth is purely hand woven; no machinery is used. Weavers sit inside a wooden handloom to create long narrow interwoven strips that are later sewn together by a tailor to make the traditional Kente cloths. It can take a long time to set up a new design on a handloom, which requires a lot of experience.

Kente is more than just a cloth. It is an iconic visual representation of the history, philosophy, ethics, oral literature, religious belief, social values, and political thought of West Africa. Kente is exported as one of the key symbols of African heritage and pride in African ancestry throughout the diaspora.

Kente is woven on a horizontal strip loom, which produces a narrow band of cloth about four inches wide. Several of these strips are carefully arranged and hand-sewn together to create a cloth of the desired size. Most kente weavers are men.
