However, the majority of retired soldiers were out-pensioners. In 1703, there were just 51 but this number rose to 36,757 by 1815, and to 85,834 in 1828. In 1852, there were still 66,730 out-pensioners. Today, the Royal Hospital is home to 300 Chelsea Pensioners.

A Greenwich Pensioner was the Naval equivalent of a Chelsea Pensioner. Although the initial concept of a Greenwich pensioner was that of someone living in the Royal Hospital Greenwich, the institution became responsible for the payment of pensions in 1804 (taking over the responsibility from the Chatham Chest).

What is the financial cost? You agree to give up both your Army Pension and Disability Pension (if you have one). The aim is to contribute a minimum amount of £175 per week. If your Army and / or Disability Pensions fall short of this mark, then you are asked to make up the difference out of personal savings.

The blues and shako uniform is worn on a daily basis by most Che sea Pensioners. It can only be worn within a two mile radius of the Royal Hospital and is often worn in the Chelsea Pensioners' Club for social events, as well as at meal times.
