Eleven is written in first-person perspective or point of view. In other words, Rachel is the one narrating the story, rather than an omniscient narrator.

At the end of the story, Rachel says “I'm eleven today. I'm eleven, ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, and one”. She seems to have resigned herself to the reality of the experience, for she knows that we all carry with us the years that came before, sometimes reverting to the child within us.

The theme of the short story "Eleven" is that no matter how old you get, there are still moments in your life where you feel like a child. Even though you continue to age, you bring along the past with you. The past experiences of the younger you is still a part of your personality even as you get older.

Rachel. Rachel is the protagonist of "Eleven," and it's her eleventh birthday.

When Mrs. Price forces Rachel to wear the nasty, sticky sweater, we reach the story's climax—the point where everything changes. Before now, Rachel might have been able to dump the sweater on the playground and salvage what was left of her birthday. But not now.

Rachel struggles through her humiliation and upset as she is forced to wear “an ugly sweater like that, all raggedy and old.” Eleven is about transition, the struggle of growing up, and the realization that we all carry inside of us the years that came before as we move forward in life.

The Resolution/Denouement occurred when Rachel admitted that her special birthday was ruined by the anxious filled day. She believed it was too late to have a "happy birthday,” and wished that the day was long gone so no one would be able to remember her crying in front of the whole class on her birthday.
