What is the NFPA 80 2010 standard for fire doors and other opening protectives?

This standard regulates the installation and maintenance of assemblies and devices used to protect openings in walls, floors, and ceilings against the spread of fire and smoke within, into, or out of buildings.

Fire rated doors are subjected to endurance testing where the specimen is exposed to extreme heat of up to 1925 degrees F for the maximum 180 minute rating. If the door remains in the frame with no through openings and limits flames, it is certified with an endurance rating of either 20/45/60/90/180 minutes.

Fire doors should be checked at least once every six months. If the door is in a high traffic area or used frequently then they should be checked more regularly e.g. once a week/month as signs of wear will appear more quickly with increased use.

A fire door is not just the door leaf. It is a complete assembly comprising the frame, any glazing, intumescent fire and smoke seals and all the ironmongery that is used on the door, such as hinges, overhead door closers, latches and locks.

This includes an inspection of the vision panels, glazing, cold smoke seals, intumescent seals, the fire resisting qualities of the doorset including its thickness and gaps between the leaf and door frame, the condition, fitting, and operation of the hinges and hardware, and checking for relevant markings, for example ...

Fire doors should be checked at least once every six months.

If your fire doors have closers, check them for damage and oil leakage, as well as checking they are still firmly attached at the door and the frame. Check also that when closed, the door is allowed to close in line with the frame (check both doors if you have a double set).
