With our GMS Group Advantage benefit plan, you can provide your employees with the group health, dental, life and disability insurance they need to remain productive.

Group health insurance (sometimes called group benefits) are offered through an employer or organization. The benefits cover many individuals, but the employer or organization is the policy holder. In most cases, it is mandatory for individuals in the group to be part of the group benefits plan.

To be eligible for small group health insurance, a company must have between two and 50 FTEs. If you're the sole proprietor, you're eligible to enroll in the group plan. However, at least one other FTE who isn't an owner must enroll in the group health plan to qualify.

Individual policies are owned by an individual person and within this category, you can choose between permanent (or whole) and term policies. Group life insurance, on the other hand, typically comes in the form of an employer-sponsored life insurance policy you receive as a benefit through work.

The policyholder is defined as a party that has a right to compensation under an insurance contract if an insured event occurs, ie the beneficiary. IFRS 17 defines a policyholder by its right to compensation if it is adversely affected by an insured event.

Group health plans are for larger groups, which reduces the risk by spreading it across many plan participants. Individual insurance products are purchased directly from an insurance company. Individual health plans are typically less comprehensive and carry more risk.

Employers aren't required to offer health insurance in Colorado if they have fewer than 50 employees. But federal law requires employers with 50 or more full-time equivalent employees (FTEs) to provide insurance with minimum essential coverage (MEC) that satisfies the Affordable Care Act's (ACA) employer mandate.

The group insurance plan is now a key component of employee benefits. Such insurance is very important because it safeguards the financial security of employees and their families, along with providing easier access to a range of healthcare services.

Although it's called “group” insurance, each employee is enrolled in their own policy just as they would be if they had purchased insurance independently. The word “group” simply references the fact that an insurance provider is covering a group of people associated with a single organization.

The public service group insurance benefit plans form part of the Government of Canada's total compensation package for public service employees. These include health and dental care benefits, disability insurance and life insurances.
