The name 'cuneiform' means 'wedge-shaped' and comes from the Latin word cuneus (wedge). It is based on the appearance of the strokes, which were made by pressing reed stylus (wooden stick) into clay. Each letter in cuneiform is made from wedge-shaped strokes (you will notice a lot of triangle- shaped strokes).

Cuneiform is not a language but a proper way of writing distinct from the alphabet. It doesn't have 'letters' – instead it uses between 600 and 1,000 characters impressed on clay to spell words by dividing them up into syllables, like 'ca-at' for cat, or 'mu-zi-um' for museum.

Cuneiform is one of the oldest forms of writing known. It means “wedge-shaped,” because people wrote it using a reed stylus cut to make a wedge-shaped mark on a clay tablet. Letters enclosed in clay envelopes, as well as works of literature, such as the Epic of Gilgamesh have been found.

On top of this, there are no gaps between signs, so it is difficult to work out which group of wedges forms a character. And whereas the Latin alphabet contains 26 letters, there are more than 900 different cuneiform signs, which can appear remarkably similar.

First developed around 3200 B.C. by Sumerian scribes in the ancient city-state of Uruk, in present-day Iraq, as a means of recording transactions, cuneiform writing was created by using a reed stylus to make wedge-shaped indentations in clay tablets.

Ultimately, it was completely replaced by alphabetic writing (in the general sense) in the course of the Roman era, and there are no cuneiform systems in current use. It had to be deciphered as a completely unknown writing system in 19th-century Assyriology.

Cuneiform is the oldest known form of writing, but it is so difficult to read that only a few hundred experts around the world can decode the clay tablets filled with wedge-shaped symbols.
