Obtaining Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certification for handling refrigerants is crucial to any HVAC business. Without certification and the expertise gained from it, HVAC professionals become at risk to substantially harming themselves or the environment.

EPA requires a section 608 certification regardless of refrigerant type based on the type of appliance (Type I, Type II, Type III, or Universal).

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires that if flammable refrigerant cylinders are to be stored in an enclosure, the enclosure be secure and ventilated. They cannot be enclosed in confined spaces, containers, or lockers.

Refrigerant Storage: “The total amount of refrigerant stored in a machinery room in all containers not provided with relief valves and piped in ance with the standard should not exceed 330 lbs.,” ing to Section 11.5 of ASHRAE 15-1994.

You are required to have an EPA Section 608 Type II or Universal certification license to handle R-410A, but no license is legally necessary for purchase.

Cylinders can usually be stored in the sun; however, cylinders must not exceed temperatures above 125 F. Always refer to the manufacturers' storage requirements and SDSs. Storage areas should protect cylinders from damage.

STORAGE RECOMMENDATIONS: Store in a cool, well-ventilated area of low fire risk and out of direct sunlight.

The three main flammability classifications are class 1, for refrigerants that do not propagate a flame when tested as per the standard; class 2, for refrigerants of lower flammability; and class 3, for highly flammable refrigerants such as the hydrocarbons.
