It is made up of three layers, the epidermis, dermis, and the hypodermis, all three of which vary significantly in their anatomy and function. The skin's structure is made up of an intricate network which serves as the body's initial barrier against pathogens, UV light, and chemicals, and mechanical injury.

A fully functional, fully human in vitro model should provide native skin structure and functionality; it should contain many different cell types that are able to proliferate and differentiate, as well as adipose tissue, vasculature and appendages.

Skin models are experimental systems that recreate aspects of human skin physiology, function or disease. They include in vitro methods, ex vivo skin cultures and animal models, especially mice and fish.

The majority of skin is made of specialized squamous epithelial cells called keratinocytes. On the skin's surface, these cells are flattened and surrounded by a protein called keratin that make skin tough and impermeable. In the deeper layers of the epidermis, keratinocytes are shaped more like columns.

Standard full-thickness reconstructed human skin models consist of a dermal equivalent overlayed by a stratified epidermal equivalent. To form the dermis, primary fibroblasts are seeded in a collagen matrix. Then, primary keratinocytes are cultured on the living dermal equivalent.

Our 3D tissues mimic skin to provide platforms with the goal of reliably correlating between in vitro studies and in vivo outcomes. We use 3D tissue biology as translational tool to accelerate development of drugs, therapeutics and skin- care products.
