Enrolled Agents practicing in Oregon must hold a consultant license with the Board of Tax Practitioners if they are preparing, assisting or advising in the preparation of individual income tax returns.

Individuals looking to work as tax professionals can either become a CPA or an enrolled agent. EAs only need to pass the SEE, while CPAs need to pass the Uniform CPA Examination and complete educational and professional requirements set by their state.

The State of Oregon requires that individuals that prepare tax returns for compensation obtain a Tax Preparer License. The Tax Preparer License enables a person to lawfully prepare personal income tax returns in the State of Oregon.

Enrolled Agent Becoming a licensed tax consultant enables licensees to lawfully prepare personal income tax returns in Oregon for a fee or valuable consideration as a self-employed or independent tax practitioner.

The only people exempt from this law are Certified Public Accountants and Public Accountants licensed by the Oregon Board of Accountancy and members of the Oregon State Bar who prepare returns for their law clients.

Tax preparers are required to complete 30 hours of continuing education related to tax law and tax preparation per year, at least two hours of which must be related to ethics or professional conduct. Continuing Education (CE) must be completed during the 13 months prior to each license year.

Whereas the CPA credential allows CPAs to work in non-tax related fields, the Enrolled Agent credential is specific to tax preparation, so virtually all EAs are professional tax preparers.

To become a CTEC registered tax preparer, you must: Take a 60-hour qualifying education course from a CTEC approved provider within the past 18 months. Purchase a $5,000 tax preparer bond from an insurance/surety agent. Get a Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) from the IRS. Approved Lives Scan.
