Contact support

The Coast Guard website summarizes the benefits available to service members including a steady paycheck, education and training, travel and adventure, medical and dental benefits, life insurance, retirement plans, financial counseling, mental health support and legal services.

The Coast Guard is the most difficult service to join. There are few openings, and it's very competitive. Average ASVAB scores for enlisted personnel are the highest of all military branches, and the Coast Guard Academy is the only service academy that doesn't accept applicants through political nominations.

Generally speaking, enlistees do not stay for this long and do not make the Coast Guard a career for themselves, since in most cases, enlistees commit to 8 years of service. Depending on the terms of the contract, 2 to 6 years are spent on active duty and the rest spent in the Coast Guard Reserves.

To join the Coast Guard, you must be a U.S. citizen or resident alien between 17 and 42 years old. While GEDs are sometimes accepted, high school diplomas are preferred. All recruits take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test to determine placement.

3. To add a dependent, complete this form and submit the appropriate documentation as indicated below. Complete CG form 2025 (BAH/Housing Worksheet) if the dependency change will result in a housing allowance change and a CG-2025B, if reporting a member-married-to-member marriage.
