The Reformer Tubes are made of basically Cr - Ni Steels. Under the severe operating conditions, the reformer tubes start creep and rupture after prolonged interval of time. The major factors for tube deformations are high internal pressures and tube wall temperatures.

The general condition of the reformer was good with all tubes operating below the design TWT of 1,700°F (927°C). However, only 72% of the tubes were within a 100°F range of the average TWT, 1,529°F (831°C).

Primary reformers. A primary reformer converts a hydrocarbon feed (e.g. natural gas) to hydrogen and carbon monoxide by means of an endothermic catalytic reaction with typically steam and CO2. It provides a mixture of H2, CO, and H2O with various fractions of CO2 (depends on the process) and non-reacted CH4.

Reformer tubes are heat-resistant cast alloy tubes used in steam reformer furnaces for producing hydrogen, an essential material for such processes as desulfurization at petroleum refining plants, ammonia synthesis for fertilizer production, methanol production, and direct reduced iron production.

The reformer tubes are full of nickel catalyst, which triggers a reaction causing the methane in natural gas to react with water vapor to form hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide.

Steam Reformer Vessel Because of the hostile nature of the reaction environment, the material of the reformer vessel will be HR-120, which is a high temperature nickel alloy.
