Fourteen Points, they outlined a plan for achieving a just and lasting peace. The first four points included an end to secret treaties, freedom of the seas, free trade, and reduced national armies and navies. The fifth goal was the adjust- ment of colonial claims with fairness toward colonial peoples.

The Fourteen Points did not make the world safe for democracy, nor did they prevent future conflicts. Most of the conflicts of the 20th century were fueled by nationalism, as were the genocides and atrocities that accompanied those wars.

The opposition came from two groups: the “Irreconcilables,” who refused to join the League of Nations under any circumstances, and “Reservationists,” led by Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman, Henry Cabot Lodge, who wanted amendments made before they would ratify the Treaty.

The most justified reaction was that of peoples from colonies in Africa and Asia. They had no imperialistic aspirations, they were involved in the war on the side of their colonial masters and used as reinforcements.

The controversial War Guilt clause blamed Germany for World War I and imposed heavy debt payments on Germany. The Treaty of Versailles was a major contributing factor in the outbreak of the Second World War.

The U.S. cannot be blamed for rejecting the Treaty, since they aimed to protect the American national interests, just like any other country would do. Wilson needed the U.S. Senate's approval of the treaty, but he failed to invite any of the members of the Senate to the Paris Peace Conference.

The Treaty of Versailles was hated by Germans. Rathenau, the foreign minister, was assassinated in 1922 for signing the treaty. The Armistice had not led to a fair settlement. The Weimar politicians who signed it were called November Criminals because people felt they had betrayed Germany.

Why did many countries feel bitter and cheated as a result of the treaty? The war guilt clause left a legacy of hatred among Germans; Africans and Asians were angry that their desire for independence was ignored; Japanese and Italians gained less land than they wanted.
