These judges, often referred to as “Article III judges,” are nominated by the President and confirmed by the U.S. Senate. Article III states that these judges “hold their office during good behavior,” which means they have a lifetime appointment, except under very limited circumstances.

The Commission cannot handle complaints against magistrates, masters, attorneys or federal judicial officers.

Judicial Retention Elections In a retention election, voters decide whether a judge should be retained or removed from office. If a judge receives a majority of “yes” votes, the judge serves another full term. If a judge receives a majority of “no” votes, the judge is removed from office at the end of the year.

The council must nominate at least two applicants for each vacancy to be filled, and the governor has 45 days after receiving the nominations to fill the vacancy. The judicial selection process typically takes 6-8 months to complete, between the time a vacancy arises and the time a new judge is appointed.

The Alaska Third District is a judicial district in Alaska.

Each justice is appointed from a list of two or more nominees compiled by the Alaska Judicial Council....To serve on this court, a justice must be: a U.S. citizen; a state resident for at least five years; licensed to practice law in the state; active in law practice for at least five years; and. under the age of 70.

After each judge is appointed, at regular intervals, the voters of Alaska have the opportunity to vote whether that judge should be allowed to remain in office or should be replaced.
