A venous Doppler ultrasound is a diagnostic test used to check the circulation in the large veins in the legs (or sometimes the arms). This exam shows any blockage in the veins by a blood clot or “thrombus” formation.

A normal result means the blood vessels show no signs of narrowing, clots, or closure, and the arteries have normal blood flow.

Pulsed-wave Doppler signals and angle-corrected Doppler waveforms are used to determine blood flow velocities at selected portions of the artery. Normal, angle-corrected peak systolic velocities (PSVs) within the proximal arm arteries, such as the subclavian and axillary arteries, generally run between 70 and 120 cm/s.

It is safe, painless and non-invasive imaging modality for the evaluation and diagnosis of any abnormality of blood flow in the arteries or veins of upper limb/arm.

An Upper Extremity Ultrasound is used to evaluate blood flow through major veins in the arms. The most common reason for a venous ultrasound exam is to search for blood clots. This condition is often referred to as deep vein thrombosis or DVT.

In normal limbs, all arteries demonstrated a characteristic sharp triphasic spectral pattern with mean peak systolic velocity of 105, 80 and 57 cm/s for the subclavian, axillary and brachial arteries, respectively.

The biphasic type describes a two-phase Doppler waveform with an extension of the reverse flow phase during the whole diastole and the disappearance of the forward flow phase during diastole, in comparison with the triphasic type. Tri- and biphasic types are considered normal.
