Typically, the costs of a funeral are shouldered by the estate of the deceased. Funeral expenses are a priority obligation that will be paid before most other estate debts. If, however, there still aren't enough funds, the person who signed the funeral contract will be responsible for the outstanding amount.

The costs can be recouped out of the assets left behind by the deceased (their 'estate'), however sometimes a person dies without leaving enough money to pay for the funeral. If this is the case then relatives would normally be expected to meet the costs.

The death certificate will usually list at least the next of kin or the informant (often a family member) who provided the information on the death certificate, while an obituary notice may list numerous family members both living and deceased.
