How to fill out the requirements for obtaining a marriage license online
This guide provides clear and comprehensive instructions on how to fill out the requirements for obtaining a marriage license. It will walk you through each step of the online process, ensuring that you have all the necessary information and documentation ready.
Follow the steps to successfully complete your marriage license application.
- Click the ‘Get Form’ button to access the requirements document. This will allow you to begin filling out the necessary information.
- Ensure both parties have the required documents ready, which include a current driver's license, state ID, or passport, as well as a certified copy of each party's birth certificate or birth card. If the birth certificate is not in English, it must be translated.
- If applicable, prepare a certified copy of the final divorce decree for individuals who have been divorced, or a certified death certificate for individuals who are widowed.
- Fill in both parties' Social Security numbers if they were born in the United States. If not born in the US or territories, be prepared to present valid identification such as a foreign passport or visa with an attached I-94 form.
- Complete the marriage license application form, ensuring that it is signed by at least one party. If one party is absent, their signature must be separately notarized. A military ID can substitute for a signature if one party is a member of the US armed forces.
- Submit the application in person at the Orleans Parish Marriage License Office or the Second City Court. Be aware of the office hours: between 8:15 a.m. and 3:15 p.m., Monday through Friday.
- Pay the non-refundable fees of $27.50 for the marriage license and $5 for each certified copy of the marriage certificate desired. Payments can only be made using cash, check, or money order.
- Once submitted, remember there is a 72-hour waiting period before your marriage ceremony can take place. If both parties are from outside Louisiana and using a registered Orleans officiant, this waiting period may be waived.
- Final steps include keeping track of your marriage license, which expires after 30 days. If the ceremony is postponed, you will need to obtain a new license.
- After the marriage ceremony, ensure that the completed marriage certificate is returned to Vital Records, including any waivers obtained.
