Now that most of the untreated ash trees are dead in Indiana, there are fewer emerald ash borers to attack the surviving ash trees. Research clearly shows that treating trees once every 3 years is enough to keep ash trees alive.

Ash Firewood After two years of aging, EAB that may have been within the wood will have emerged or died. Aged firewood poses little risk of introducing EAB, and you may move it freely within the limits of the quarantine.

If an ash tree has EAB, can it be saved? tree is otherwise healthy. However, once an infested ash tree has lost about 30% or more of its leaf canopy, it has become very compromised and is unlikely to survive even with treatment.

We have detected EAB infestations in 36 States and the District of Columbia. EAB is difficult to detect early when pest populations are small because damage to the trees is hidden under the bark and tree decline is gradual. The beetle is well-suited to our climate, is a good flyer, and spreads naturally.

Sadly, EAB is not going away. This paper, 'The Biology and Control of Emerald Ash Borer' (pdf) from the USDA Forestry service is a little heavy, but it was made fairly clear several years ago that EAB is finding alternative hosts in the Fraxinus family Oleaceae (p. 55):

In Minnesota, it was discovered in 2009 in St. Paul, and a year later in Minneapolis and southeast Minnesota. Emerald ash borer continues to spread; it was found in greater Duluth in 2015.

The emerald ash borer (EAB) is a serious invasive tree pest, and consequently a quarantine has been placed on Ramsey, Dakota, Hennepin, Houston, and Winona Counties to help slow the spread of EAB to other areas.

History and Distribution Emerald ash borer currently is not established in California.
