Texas is renowned for its exotic game hunting opportunities. Many ranches offer hunts for non-native species such as axis deer, nilgai, blackbuck antelope, and scimitar-horned oryx. These animals thrive in Texas' diverse habitats and provide year-round hunting options.

Texas is home to an array of non-game animals. These include armadillos, bobcats, coyotes, flying squirrels, frogs, ground squirrels, mountain lions, porcupines, prairie dogs, rabbits and turtles. On private property, these species can be hunted at any time with a valid hunting license.

It shall be unlawful to pursue, take or possess any bobcat without first procuring a hunting license and bobcat hunting tags. It shall be unlawful to trap any bobcat, or attempt to do so.

Non-game animals include (but are not limited to) the following: armadillos, bobcats coyotes, flying squirrels, frogs, ground squirrels, mountain lions, porcupines, prairie dogs, rabbits, and turtles. There is no closed season on these animals and a valid hunting license is required.

Bobcats. Bobcats may be a popular pet for those interested in owning an exotic animal, as they are considered one of the “easier” exotic felines to keep. Nonetheless, they fall within Texas's category of “dangerous wild animals,” and it is illegal to own one without obtaining a Certificate of Registration.

A hunting license is required of any person (resident or nonresident), of any age, to hunt any animal, bird, frog or turtle in this state, except the following: coyotes, if the coyotes are attacking, about to attack, or have recently attacked livestock, domestic animals, or fowl.
