The Colorado Measures of Academic Success, or CMAS, is the state summative assessment for language arts, math, science and social studies. CMAS is aligned to the state's rigorous academic standards and designed to gauge how well students are mastering the standards and are prepared for their next grade.

Frustration over student stress, class time lost to test prep and an increasing focus on math and literacy at the expense of subjects like science and social studies have led some parents to "opt out" of these assessments for their children.

In Colorado, students in third through eighth grade take the Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS) in English language arts and math. Students in fifth and eighth grade also take a test in science. In 11th grade, students take the SAT and CMAS in science.

The Colorado Measures of Academic Success, known as CMAS, are the state's common measurement of students' progress at the end of the school year in English language arts, math and science. Students in grades three through eight take the CMAS tests in math and English language arts.
