The state of Virginia allows out-of-state teachers the ability to qualify for teaching certification in Virginia through reciprocity. Out-of-state teachers will need to complete the regular Application for Virginia Licensure and provide all material that is detailed in the application.

Licensure by reciprocity is provided for individuals who have obtained a valid out-of-state license, with full credentials and without deficiencies, that is in force at the time the application for a Virginia license is received by the Virginia Department of Education.

Virginia requires educators to pass two exams: the Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment (VCLA) and the Praxis Subject Assessment from the Praxis Series of exams. The Praxis Subject Assessment will vary depending on your endorsement area and intended grade level.

Virginia requires a minimum of a bachelor's degree from an accredited program to become a licensed teacher in the state. As a part of this degree, you will need field experience, along with time as a supervised student teacher.
