Surface Discharge: When discharge travels along the surface of insulation, this is called surface discharge—or surface tracking. It can be one of the most destructive types of partial discharge. Contamination and weather of the insulator surface are the two most common causes of surface discharge.

The partial discharge intensity is measured in Pico-coulombs (pC) or, alternatively, radio interference voltage (RIV) in microvolts (μV). The partial discharge/RIV measuring system consists of, Partial discharge meter (Type DTM) which is the basic measuring unit with built-in oscilloscope.

Surface water discharge means any discharge which is discharged directly to a surface water body or stormwater collection system, including, but not limited to, direct pipe discharges and ground surface run-off discharges which are not totally absorbed by the soil.

There are multiple situations that can cause PD to occur. Many are due to human error: contamination, poor installation, or manufacturing defects. Some causes are environmental such as temperature and humidity. Over time, PD can also occur due to aging of the insulation.

Electrical discharges can occurring in a gas, liquid or a vacuum in close vicinity to a solid dielectric surface. Such a discharge is known as a surface discharge.

Surface Discharge: When discharge travels along the surface of insulation, this is called surface discharge—or surface tracking. It can be one of the most destructive types of partial discharge. Contamination and weather of the insulator surface are the two most common causes of surface discharge.

PD can occur at various points in the insulation system, for example: voids or cavities in solid or liquid insulation medium, at the interface between insulation layers such as delamination. PD can be observed at various stages during the assets lifecycle.

Different from positive polarity square wave voltage, the surface discharge of silicone gel and DBC have multiple discharge behaviors in one cycle. In one cycle, the discharge behavior of silicone gel and DBC is single pulse in a positive half cycle, and the discharge pulse is 1 or 2 pulses in negative half cycle.
