Practice Sheets are a key part of the All About Reading program, and for good reason: they help kids develop fluency, which is the ability to read smoothly, accurately, and with expression. In fact, many of you call them “fluency sheets” because they are so helpful in guiding students toward fluency.

Independent practice provides an opportunity for students to practise the skills or concepts from the lesson. Its purpose is to increase students' fluency, enabling for a more automatic recall of the skills that have been learnt as well as freeing up space in working memory so that higher-order tasks can be applied.

The primary use of independent practice is to help engage students formatively in their own learning. As an analogy, consider how one learns to play the guitar. During a guitar music lesson, the teacher provides the student opportunities to practice playing scales, notes, and chords through guided practice.

Description. Independent Practice is the part of the lesson cycle where students are given the opportunity to practice the concept presented during the Introduction to New Learning and is a time for students to work towards mastery of the knowledge/skills presented in the lesson before an assessment is given.

Several goals can be attributed to drill and practice exercises. They can be used to build confidence as more answers are correctly provided. They also help to reinforce important materials. Learners are also provided and opportunity to practice critical skills and knowledge sets.

Independent Work in Being a Reader provides the students with choice in what they do as they read, write, and complete word work independently. The students have time for extensive practice on concepts and skills that are taught in Ҭa whole-class setting across the language arts block.

Independent practice is a new Responsive Classroom strategy for introducing concepts and skills to middle school students by creating opportunities for them to interactively explore the content through hands-on learning. In independent practice, students work by themselves without guidance from their teacher.
