How to use or fill out the For This Activity You Will Need Microsoft Visio, Which Is Installed On The WIU Network/Citrix System online
This guide provides clear instructions on utilizing Microsoft Visio for creating a normalized conceptual schema. By following these steps, you will learn how to efficiently fill out the necessary components of the activity form in an online environment.
Follow the steps to effectively complete your form
- Press the ‘Get Form’ button to access the form and open it within the designated online environment.
- Open Microsoft Visio by selecting the Visio icon on your desktop. Create a new document and save it as ConceptualSchemaUsername, ensuring that you save your progress frequently.
- Navigate to the File menu, then select Shapes, followed by Database, and choose ORM (Metric).
- Drag the Entity shape onto the working grid. Double-click the shape and input ‘MemberID’ as the text description.
- Click outside the object. Each oval in this diagram stands for an attribute of an entity; for instance, MemberID denotes an attribute describing the entity, Member.
- Drag another Entity shape onto the working grid and position it below the MemberID attribute. Input ‘MemberName’ as the text. You may add more attributes as required, but we will use these two for this activity.
- Utilize the subtype connector and attach the bottom of the arrow to the MemberName attribute and the top to the MemberID attribute. Highlight MemberID as the primary key by shading it with light blue.
- Select the MemberID object, access the color settings, and choose a light blue shade to emphasize it as the primary key.
- Use the text box tool to label the entity as ‘Member’. Deactivate text mode by selecting the pointer tool, ensuring editing capabilities for shapes or text boxes.
- Repeat the above process to create another entity, ensuring to establish each attribute and identify the primary key appropriately.
- Establish relationships between the entities, noting a one-to-many relationship where each member can register for several clubs. The MemberID acts as a foreign key in the ClubRegistration entity.
- Shade the foreign key with yellow and connect the MemberID in the Member entity to the MemberID in the ClubRegistration entity using the constraint connector.
- Format the dashed line representing the relationship by right-clicking on it, selecting the Format option, then Line, and adjusting the weight to 5. Apply your settings and confirm.
- After completing your diagram, you may save changes, download, print, or share the form as necessary.
