Projectiles are one of the biggest dangers associated with the MRI scanning environment and occur when the strong magnetic fields of the MRI magnet attract ferromagnetic (metal) objects which then become airborne.

The strong, static magnetic field of the MRI scanner will pull on magnetic materials and may cause unwanted movement of the medical device. The radiofrequency energy and magnetic fields that change with time may cause heating of the implanted medical device and the surrounding tissue, which could lead to burns.

Key points for safe use Make sure that there is no skin contact in patients' arms and legs at positioning. Provide patients with clear instructions not to move (change their body position) while being scanned in the MRI machine. Risk of burns!

The magnetic fields that change with time create loud knocking noises which may harm hearing if adequate ear protection is not used. They may also cause peripheral muscle or nerve stimulation that may feel like a twitching sensation. The radiofrequency energy used during the MRI scan could lead to heating of the body.

Health and Safety while undergoing an MRI exam Nothing metal or electronic is allowed inside MRI room. Patients are required to change into MRI safe clothing MR safety. Patients are required to bring medical implant cards. Powerful magnetic field is always ON.

MRI safety warnings You must never enter an MRI room unless qualified to do so. You are not permitted to enter even if a patient has had a cardiac arrest. The patient must be removed from the room by MRI department staff before resuscitation can start.

Remove all metal items such as hair clips, jewelry, watches, hearing aids and dentures. Credit cards will be erased if brought into the MRI. You will be asked to change into a gown for your exam.

Risks. Because MRI uses powerful magnets, the presence of metal in your body can be a safety hazard if attracted to the magnet. Even if not attracted to the magnet, metal objects can distort the MRI images.
