Private consumption includes all purchases made by consumers, such as food, housing (rents), energy, clothing, health, leisure, education, communication, transport as well as hotels and restaurant services.

Personal consumption expenditures is a measure of consumer spending. PCE is constructed and reported by the Bureau of Economic Analysis, along with personal income and the PCE Price Index in the Personal Income and Outlays report. PCE includes how much is spent on durable and non-durable goods and services.

Consumption factors refer to the key elements that influence individuals to purchase goods and services. These include price, quality, and convenience.

Private consumption is divided into three categories: Durable goods that are defined as goods with a lifetime greater than three years, services that include travel and car repairs, and non-durable goods such as food and water that can be immediately consumed.

In national income accounting, private consumption expenditure is divided into three broad categories: expenditures for services, for durable goods, and for nondurable goods.

Autonomous consumption, "A", which is the amount that consumers would spend if there was no disposable income. Marginal propensity to consume, "MPC", which is the extra consumer spending that occurs for every $1 increase in disposable income, and is the slope of the consumption function equation or graph.
