To receive a bachelor's degree from UW–Madison, students must earn a minimum of 120 degree credits (which includes Advanced Placement [AP], International Baccalaureate [IB] and other test credit, transfer credit, and retroactive credit). All graduate students should apply for graduation in the MyUW Student Center to note their preferences for commencement. Visit the Graduate School's website for additional information about completing your Master's degree and Doctoral degree.

Participation in the commencement ceremony does not imply that you have officially graduated. Graduation is the completion of all degree requirements as recorded on the official transcript. Commencement is the ceremony that celebrates the completion of a degree.

You need to apply for graduation before the deadline announced by the Chancellor's Office, if you want your name in the commencement program. It's usually in early November (for December commencement) and early April (for May commencement).

To amend a submitted graduation application or cancel a submitted graduation application, notify the Graduation Specialists via ugradoff@uw.edu. The Graduation Specialists can amend and delete the application.

If the college allows you an extension on your application, your next step is to work diligently until it's completed. Extensions are not common for colleges to grant, so, if you've been given the opportunity to take more time on your application, you should be sure not to miss your deadline twice.

No tickets are required to attend either ceremony. Guest seating is general admission, first-come, first-served. There is no limit to the number of guests that graduates may bring.

Degree Application and Graduation Information Complete the online degree application form. Communicate with an advisor to confirm graduation requirements. Complete all necessary paperwork required for graduation and for teaching certificate. Complete all coursework, required major assessments, and program exit requirements.
