Angus are moderate-sized, muscular animals, renowned as a carcase breed. They are used widely in crossbreeding to improve carcase quality and milking ability. Angus is a preferred breed for the Japanese high-quality beef market because of their propensity to marble, their white fat and bright-red lean meat.

Mark your calendars for a “Showdown in Madtown” and the 2024 National Junior Angus Show in Madison, Wisconsin!

In 1808, a man named Hugh Watson from Keillor Farm in Angus county began to selectively breed from a wide variety of the black hornless cattle. He was looking for an animal that would produce high-quality meat, and would be docile and easy to raise.

The American Angus Association is the nation's largest beef registry association with over 30,000 adult and junior members. Our goal is to serve the beef cattle industry, and increase the production of consistent, high quality beef that will better satisfy consumers throughout the world.

The Angus breed has a storied history of providing the best possible cattle genetics to farmers and ranchers worldwide. Since 1873, people have looked to Angus to fulfill genetic requirements — calving ease, high growth, carcass value — that set the stage for a profitable cow herd.

Under the new USDA decision, Red Angus will now be eligible to be simply labeled “Angus,” in every certified beef program that agrees to it. “Red Angus is a source of quality cattle that has not been utilized by many of these brands,” Brink said.

The Association's four entities—Angus Productions Inc., the Angus Foundation, Angus Genetics Inc., and Certified Angus Beef LLC—also help serve the Angus breed and the beef industry.

Proper identification at birth is essential to maintain accurate herd records. The Association requires every animal to be permanently identified in order to be eligible for registration. The Association accepts tattoo marks, freeze-branded marks and hot-branded marks as forms of “permanent identification.”
