A deceased donor can donate and save up to eight lives by donating organs after death. These major organs include the heart, intestines, kidneys, liver, lungs, and pancreas. The liver, in some instances, can be split and help save the lives of two individuals.

Some medical conditions, such as contagious diseases and extreme emaciation or obesity, can render a body unacceptable for scientific study. Additionally, certain circumstances of death may preclude donation. A final decision can only be made at the time of death.

Once a body is accepted for donation, these organizations typically cover the cost of transporting the body to their research facility, cremating the body after studies are completed, and returning the cremated remains to the family, usually in less than eight weeks.

You can provide consent to donate your body: by filling out a consent form (Donation of Body to School of Anatomy) available from any School of Anatomy. in writing, as per section 4(1) of the Gift of Life Act. orally, in the presence of at least two witnesses prior to death.

If donor forms are not on file with the Body Donation Program at the time of death, the next of kin may make an after death donation of the body to our program. Please contact the Body Donation Program (210-567-3900) to receive instruction to do so.

How to become a donor. Contact 905-525-9140 ext 22273 or write McMaster University, Education Program in Anatomy, 1280 Main St. West, HSC 1R1, Hamilton, Ontario L8S 4K1 to obtain a “Donation of Body to School of Anatomy” form. Part 1 of the form is to be completed and returned to the Education Program in Anatomy.
