Does Kentucky require intrastate authority?

​Kentucky Intrastate For-Hire Authority is for carriers that pick up and deliver the same cargo within Kentucky. Out-of-state carriers that are for-hire that only transport cargo across state lines using the motor carrier authority from FMCSA are not required to have this authority.

You may apply online for a permanent KYU number through the Motor Carrier Portal​ or through the mail with a paper application.

You will need to complete a Kentucky application form and submit by mail or in person to the Division of Motor Carriers. Incomplete applications will be returned, which will delay processing. There is no fee for decals. You will need one set per qualified vehicle.

​APPLY FOR A KYU LICENSE​ KYU Numbers are issued immediately upon completion of the ONLINE KYU Application. If you are having technical issues processing an Online Application, you can print and mail in a completed Kentucky Trucking Application Form.

D.O.T. NUMBERS* If the combined or actual weight of a commercial truck, load and trailer exceeds 10,001 lbs. or if the GVWR of the truck is 10,001 lbs. or greater, a DOT number is required. (Regardless of the actual vehicle weight, if the GVWR is over 10,001 lbs., a DOT number is required).

$40. This application is for a new KYU number. If you previously had a KYU number, you will need to call the Kentucky tax division at 502-564-4150 to reinstate your old KYU number. If you need a 10 day temporary permit, please call 502-564-4127.

International Fuel Tax (IFTA) Processing Consortium (IPC) Motor Carriers can manage their motor fuels use tax compliance across multiple jurisdictions, including Kentucky.

​Effective July 1, 2023, per gallon motor fuel tax rates for Kentucky are as follows: ​Gasoline - 28.7 cents. Liquefied Petroleum - 28.7 cents. Special Fuels - 2​5.7 cents.
