To advance science and improve human health, NIH makes the peer-reviewed articles it funds publicly available on PubMed Central. The NIH Public Access Policy requires scientists to submit final peer-reviewed journal manuscripts that arise from NIH funds to PubMed Central immediately upon acceptance for publication.

The NIHR Open Access policy is based on four principles: Principle 1 - Articles must be immediately, freely and openly accessible to all. Principle 2 - There should be no barriers to the re-use and dissemination of NIHR funded articles. Principle 3 - Articles must be freely discoverable.

The PMCID is a unique reference number or identifier that is assigned to every article that is accepted into PMC. The PMCID is also used by recipients of NIH funding to demonstrate compliance with the NIH Public Access policy. The PMCID can be found in both PMC and PubMed.

PMCIDs are listed next to the PMID above the abstract. Another way to find and track PMCIDs is to add the paper to My NCBI (See My NCBI and My Bibliography Training Materials for instructions). My NCBI will automatically add the PMCID to a citation once it is available.

DOI, digital object identifier, is a unique string identifying internet content. PMCID, PubMed Central ID, is the unique citation identifier for the records indexed in PMC.

PMCID vs PMID Please do not confuse PMCID with PMID. PMCID is a unique reference number or identifier that is assigned to every full-text article that is accepted into PubMed Central (PMC). PMID is a unique identifier assigned to each citation as it is added to PubMed.

If a journal is not routinely indexed in PubMed, it's published articles don't have PMID numbers. (ex: non-medical journals covering topics such as biostatistics, biophysics, social sciences, etc).

MMID is the short form for Mobile Money Identifier. It is usually denoted in the form of a 7-digit number that is allotted to a customer holding a bank account, by the respective bank. Whenever a user wants to send or receive money using IMPS, he/she has to use this code.
