Wear long sleeve nitrile or latex gloves. Minimize movement of contaminated items over clean items (work from clean to dirty). Perform work 6 inches back of front intake grille.

Preparing to work in the BSC Wear appropriate personal protective equipment. ... Check certification sticker to confirm that BSC has been certified within the past 12 months. Operate cabinet blowers for at least 5 minutes prior to starting work. Disinfect cabinet surface prior to starting work.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the National Institute of Health (NIH) agree that UV lamps are not recommended nor required in biological safety cabinets (5).

Remember to keep the front and rear grilles unobstructed to avoid disrupting the airflow in the BSC. Items should be placed as far back in the cabinet as possible without blocking the rear grille. While working in a BSC, you should be seated, and only one person should work in the BSC at a time.

For your safety, EH&S recommends: Avoid working in or around the safety cabinet when the UV light is on or avoid using the room when UV light is on. Always close the sash completely when the UV light is on. Even small opening of the sash can cause skin damage and other biological effects.

Standard operation procedures Avoid disrupting airflow: Minimize movement (especially rapid movements) into and out of the BSC, or in areas near the BSC. Do not block the front grill or rear vents with your arms or other materials. Work at least 4 inches from the inside edge of the front vent.

Safety Guidelines The total intensity from 320 to 400 nm hitting an unprotected eye should not exceed 10 W m-2 for periods longer than 1000 seconds. For shorter exposure times, the energy density should not exceed 104 J m-2.

Most BSCs (e.g., Class II and Class III) use high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters in both the exhaust and supply system to prevent exposure to biohazards. There are several designs of biosafety cabinets which provide different levels of protection to the worker and to the research material.
