The largest class of Alcoholic Beverage Licenses (commonly referred to as a “liquor license”) is the Class C Retailer's License. These licenses allow the licensee to sell alcoholic beverages for off-premise consumption (liquor store) and/or on-premise consumption (bar/restaurant).

Permit applications are still available on this site for reference, however you must login to the ABC Licensing System in order to submit an online application. If you have any questions about applying for a permit, you may contact the Division at 609-984-2830.

How much is a liquor license in New Jersey? A liquor license in New Jersey can cost from $200 - $500.

Obtaining a liquor license is not easy task. Due to municipal population caps, liquor licenses are incredibly valuable in New Jersey. Since 1948, new retail consumption (bar/restaurant) and distribution licenses (liquor store) may only be issued in a municipality whose population exceeds certain limits.

Supermarkets, convenience stores, and gas stations in New Jersey rarely sell alcoholic beverages because state law prohibits any person or corporation from possessing more than two retail distribution licenses. While licenses for bars, restaurants and liquor stores are limited, other retail licenses are not.

Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control.

Due to population cap restrictions, most towns and cities cannot create and bid any “new” retail consumption (restaurant/bar) or retail distribution (liquor store) licenses. This means that the only way for a potential buyer to obtain a licensee is through a person-to-person transfer.

It takes between 30 and 90 days to process a liquor license application, depending on what kind of application it is, so be sure to build this time frame into your countdown to opening.
