A “guardian ad litem” (GAL) is a neutral person the court appoints to investigate what solutions would be in the “best interests of a child.” Here, we are talking about a GAL in a divorce or parental rights and responsibilities case.

A guardian ad litem (GAL) is a person appointed by a court to look after and protect the interests of someone who is unable to take care of themselves, typically a minor or someone who is determined to be legally incompetent.

A person seeking appointment as a professional guardian of an incapacitated adult shall submit an application to the Administrative Judge. Application forms are available from the Probate Court Administrative Office.

The primary goal of the guardian ad litem is to act in the best interests of the child. A guardian ad litem is a person who a court appoints to look after a person while a case is being heard. To determine what options would be in the "best interests of a child," the court appoints a "guardian ad litem" (GAL).

A Guardian Ad Litem or “GAL”is someone the Judge chooses to help a person who cannot come to court or protect their rights. What does a GAL do? In Housing Court, GALs work to help the person they are appointed to represent solve their Court case.

In New Hampshire, the retainer usually ranges between $1,000 and $1,500. Additionally, the hourly rate varies from $60 to $100 per hour. When one or both parties cannot afford to pay for the GAL, the court may order the payment of services from the Guardian ad Litem court fund.

Typically the judge or marital master issues an order appointing a particular GAL to investigate specific issues that are in dispute. The court order will designate how much each party is required to pay the GAL unless the parties are indigent.

Guardian ad litem (GAL) means “guardian for the suit.” A guardian ad litem in Virginia is an attorney appointed by a judge to assist the court in determining the circumstances of a matter before the court.
