The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is Newfoundland and Labrador's Provincial Police Service; we have enjoyed a long and proud history which dates back to 1729. The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Mounted Unit has been and continues to be a significant part of that history.

If stopped by the police, they will likely ask for your name and ad- dress. They may also ask you for identification. In most cases, you are not required to provide this in- formation.

In 1894 as a result of the Bridge Street Affray, a number of Police in Sydney were injured while attempting to arrest a group of safe-breakers. Parliament subsequently passed legislation authorising the arming of all members of the NSW Police Force and all Police have carried firearms ever since.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is one of the oldest police forces in North America. It officially formed in 1871, but its roots go back much further, to 1729. In that year, Newfoundland Governor Henry Osborn divided the island into six districts and appointed constables in each one.

In the 1700s, law enforcement officers used pistols as the most common weapon. By 1800, revolvers had become the most popular choice. In the 1900s, shotguns became common due to their power and accuracy. In 1915, machine guns were first used by law enforcement officers in the United States during a shootout on a train.

The first women were sworn in as constables in 1980. Between 1981 and 1986, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary gradually re-expanded, replacing the RCMP in the northeast Avalon Region, parts of Labrador, and Corner Brook. In 1998, RNC officers were authorized to begin carrying their handguns on their belt.

Why would the police come to my house? Serving a search warrant or arrest warrant. Attempting to investigate a suspect. Looking to question witnesses to a crime. Responding to a call for service to 911 from a resident or neighbor.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) is Newfoundland and Labrador's Provincial Police Service. The RNC dates back to 1729, with the appointment of the first police constables.
