Over the past 11 years, Hamilton, Missouri, has generated a list of nicknames: the Disneyland of Quilting, the Quilting Capital of the World, and Quilt Town, USA.

The history of quilting can be traced back at least to medieval times. The V&A has early examples in its collection from Europe, India and the Far East. The word 'quilt' – linked to the Latin word 'culcita', meaning a bolster or cushion – seems to have first been used in England in the 13th century.

Quilting as a communal act for American women in general and Black American women in particular can be traced back to antebellum times. Born out of necessity, enslaved women began to quilt in order to supplement the sparse and inadequate bedding provided for them — when, on rare occasions, bedding was in fact provided.

The earliest known indication of quilting was an ivory carving found in the Temple of Osiris at Abydos in 1903. Dated approximately 5,500 years ago, or around 35th century BC, it depicts the king or Pharaoh of the Egyptian First Dynasty clad in a quilted mantle or cloak.

United States. Quilt making was common in the late 17th century and early years of the 18th century. Colonial quilts were not made of leftover scraps or worn clothing as a humble bedcovering during this period but were decorative items that displayed the fine needlework of the maker, such as the Baltimore album quilts.

Padded textiles used as bedcoverings were found throughout the world long before the first English and Dutch settlers arrived in the New World. By necessity in the early years of colonies, the quilting of bedcovering soon flourished.

The first quilts arrived in Canada with immigrants to “New France” in the early 1600s. These settlers brought as much bedding, clothing and fabric with them as they could carry. There was always a shortage of fabric, needles and thread in the early days because it had to be imported from Europe.
